What Do Hair Salons Suggest for Baldness? How to Style a Client and Why?

In ancient times, baldness was a source of shame, as hair symbolized strength and status. Over the years, baldness has become more socially accepted, partly due to its increased prevalence and more open cultural attitudes. Today, baldness is no longer seen as a sign of disgrace; instead, it reflects individual personality and self-acceptance. Although adjusting to a "hair-free" look is a personal journey, transitioning to such a state is rarely easy, regardless of the reasons. We are generally used to focusing on facial features, often framed by hair – of various colors, styles, and lengths. This becomes apparent when someone asks us to describe a person, and we often begin by mentioning their hairstyle.

To better cope with baldness, many turn to their hairdresser. It’s wise to do so when noticing an unusual increase in hair loss. Pay attention during fall and spring, as natural changes can lead to greater hair shedding in these seasons.

A stylist can recommend different cutting techniques to conceal early signs of baldness, such as a "bare forehead." This involves minimizing cuts in areas where hair is thinning or trimming only the damaged ends. Hair can be styled forward to make thinning less noticeable. The hair is cut shorter in the back, where it’s denser, creating an overall look of fullness. If the individual is confident, they might choose to shave the head completely, making baldness less noticeable by spreading it over the entire scalp. Shaving is less common for women, as baldness typically affects them less severely. For women, cuts that add volume can help hair appear fuller.

When cutting alone no longer conceals baldness, hair salons recommend the following methods to cover it:

Hairpieces and Extensions. These are used not only to cover bald spots but also to instantly create the appearance of thicker or longer hair. This approach is popular among those with short hair or those preparing for special events like weddings, proms, or important meetings. It’s essential to consult a professional, ideally a stylist familiar with your hair type, about using hairpieces or extensions. Hair shouldn’t be too fragile, as extensions attach to natural hair, which could be pulled out if too weak. In such cases, occasional use of clip-in hairpieces is better. Knowing which types of extensions suit your hair best helps prevent damage, and short-term use can give the impression of fuller, longer hair.

Products to Conceal Baldness. The market offers numerous products to thicken hair and stimulate follicles. Experts recommend those containing minoxidil or anti-androgen agents. Consulting with a stylist or dermatologist is advised to determine the best product based on individual needs and the stage of hair loss.

Surgical Treatment. Hair transplants are a surgical solution for baldness. In this outpatient procedure, a doctor transplants hair from other areas to where it’s thinning. Although the process sounds simple, it typically takes three to five hours. Follicles are taken from specific areas and transplanted to bald spots with special micro-instruments. Being a surgical method, it involves some pain and risks and is usually more costly than other options.

Wigs. Wig wearers are often those who have not lost hair permanently and will regrow it. During this period, they use different types of wigs to maintain their usual appearance. High-quality wigs, ideally with natural hair and hand-tied, are the most effective for a seamless look.

As mentioned, how one perceives baldness is a personal matter. However, in a world with solutions to nearly every problem, it would be unwise to let baldness prevent us from pursuing our goals.
